PirateZoom
So, for my school graphics GCSE project, I need to create graphic products to promote The Pirate Party/The Pirate Bay. I wanted to do something cutting edge, something different from the business card-letterhead fever that seems to grip the classroom. So I want to make a DeepZoom app! I got 44 images from people in school, and getting any more is going to be difficult. I used these 44 to make a DZ model, but it didn’t turn out too amazingly – which is where I want you to help me out.
I need pictures. Lots of them. Basically what I need is an image of you, you and some friends, your dog, your cat, whatever, holding up a picture of the Pirate Bay/Pirate Party logo, or holding up a piece of paper with “I’m a pirate!” or “I pirate X” on it. I don’t mind. Get creative.
So, help a brother out! I’ll end up putting the whole project on the web eventually for you to play around with – maybe you can try and find your picture! Email your images to lloyd.humph at gmail dot com. Keep them under 1mb! Ideally I need over 500 images, but if I can get more I can make a bigger PirateZoom!
Heres the demo one I did – it doesn’t work very well since you can see many of the images many times. http://www.lloydhumphreys.com/content/piratezoom/
Thanks!
Lloyd, you lazy rats ass! You didn’t teach us how to make our animations into GIFs for the web. Well yeah, sorry. I forgot. I’d been on granpa’s ol’ cough medicine. So here it is.
Got your animation? Good, because this tutorial is a bit useless without it.
Hit up the File menu, then go to Save for Web & Devices… or hit the stupidly complex shortcut, Alt+Shift+Ctrl+S. To be honest, I could probably click faster than it’d take me to position my fingers in the right place.

A little (or large, depends on your media size) window will pop up giving you a few options.

You wont need a lot of the options in the side panel, if you’re sticking to simple. I’ll explain the more complex things in a later tutorial, where I’ll explore more in depth animation.
File type: pick your poison

Looping options and frame stepper – step through your frames, and change the options of your animation repetition. Do you want it to play once, or repeat? Just bear in mind.. repetitive animations can be a royal pain in the backend if you abuse them on your website. They might look great to you, but do they distract from the actual function of the site? Keep it in mind.
The other stuff is a bit more complex, but like I said – that’s for another time.
Is incredibly simple. So here I go explaining it to you guys’n’gals!
Today I’m going to make a counter that counts down from 5, movie-style. You’re going to need to be familiar with layers, but if you’re not you’ll probably be able to follow anyway. If you can’t – that’s what comments are for, right?
Start by setting up your workspace. Head to Window > Animation and make sure it’s checked. Make sure your layers window is open too.
I made a 640x480px canvas with a dark grey background. Make a circle on it.

Today we’re making some iTunes Coverflow-like stuff.
1.Grab an image, and put it onto an artboard.

Before we begin, am I spelling Polaroid wrong?
Do I even care?
Nah.
Credit to ColorBlindPicaso of Flickr for the image used in this tutorial. Original Image.
1. Create a new image, mine’s 900px by 900px. Then get the image you want to Polaroid-ize.

One of the handiest things in Photoshop is the ability to use other peoples/make your own brushes. Brushes are artwork to be used by the Brush tool, and their colour can be changed using the traditional colour palette.
So, let’s create a coffee-stain-ring to put on our coffee table.
1. Go get a picture of a coffee-stain from the web, I got mine from www.istockphoto.com.
2. Open it in Photoshop, then duplicate the Background Layer. I called mine Work Layer since it’s the one we’re going to be working on.
Hide the Background Layer by clicking the eye next to the preview.

Last time, we looked at how to make a Polaroid-like scatter of images. Today, we’re going to cut them out and put them on a coffee table – and add a few coffee stains, too
Before you think I’m going crazy and think “Hey, why don’t we just do that all the time instead of all these different methods?” It’s because a) You’ll learn 2/3 ways of doing things, and b) I’ll document the 2/3 ways I know of doing things. This is for me too
Open up the PSD from last time.
1. You’re going to need the Magic Wand tool. Press W or click here.
